Robert J. Stopera, Sr. - July 20, 2018

Cohoes Robert J. Stopera, Sr., - Robert J. Stopera, Sr., 87, of Bedford St., Cohoes, passed away peacefully at his residence embraced by his loving family on Friday, July 20, 2018. Born in Cohoes, he was the son of the late John J. and Mary Miazga Stopera and beloved husband of Helen M. Keefe Stopera of Cohoes.

Bob was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Cohoes High School. He was a proud United States Marine Corps Veteran and was employed for 40 years with Niagara Mohawk as a hot stick lineman. Bob enjoyed playing golf, sharing with his wife, RPI hockey games, SUNY Albany and Siena College Basketball games. He was an avid Mets fan and coached baseball at the Cohoes Intermediate Field. Bob enjoyed the excitement of the Casinos and horseracing. He was a board member and a member of the Niagara Mohawk Retirees, American Legion, Post 1450, Halfmoon, former State Post Commander, VFW, Post 729, Watervliet, Cohoes Waterford Elks #1317 and Veterans of Lansingburgh.

In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by his devoted children Robert J. Stopera, Jr., Mary Ellen (William) Robinson, all of Cohoes, Nancy (John) Nadeau of Poinciana, FL, Kathy (Ralph) Rouche and Sandy Stopera, all of Cohoes, much loved grandchildren, Sarah, Kate, Morgan Jesse, Carly and Robbie, adored great grandchildren, Seth, Ross, Jack, Luke, Ryan, Lola and Zoey. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and many cherished friends, especially his partners in crime, Don and Pat Marr. He was predeceased by his brother, John (the late Mildred) Stopera.

Funeral from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ltd 105 Vliet Blvd Cohoes, Tuesday morning at 8:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church Tuesday morning at 9:00.

Interment with Military honors will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Cohoes.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Monday from 4-7 pm.

A very heartfelt thank you and extreme appreciation to the staff of the Eddy Visiting Nurse Palliative Care and to Community Hospice of Rensselaer County for all their support and wonderful care extended to Bob and his family.
